Yep, I've moved again.
This time I'm further north in Yamagata. It's up in the mountains and I can sure feel the difference in temperature! I'm about a 40 minute bus ride from the best skiing in Japan. I'd love to try snowboarding this year. We'll see. Our first snow is supposed to be on Thursday, but the mountains are already capped.
I love my new town. I'm working for James English School and I really love it. It's great to be treated with respect as a teacher. I love having all the resources I need at my fingertips. I love planning and thinking in semester-like terms rather than student's contracts. It makes the whole experience so much more enjoyable. i don't feel any pressure to sell or responsibility to make sure a student renews. The lack of those kinds of pressures make it so much easier for me to be a better teacher.
The staff I work with is AWESOME. There is Scott. He's our manager from the sticks in Canada. His wife just had a baby boy and we are all in congratulations mode! They named the baby Rick...which is a good name all in all. But in Japanese, it is pronounced Lick. Hmm. John and Nadine are a couple from Thunder Bay Canada and have been together for 10 years since their high school days. It still boggles my mind that they live and work together, but haven't ripped each other to shreds yet. They are both really wonderful. Nadine and I are like 2 peas in an iPod music-wise and John gets my goofy 80's/90's references. I'm grateful for that. They have a psycho cat named Boomer. Lisa Mee is from Colorado and spent quite a bit of time in Antarctica. She is dating a guy named Yuta. He spends so much time at her place that she insisted his dog come and live with her. George is a little doxen with seal legs and I love him to bits. Everytime we hang out at my place he waddles down and finds a nice pillow to curl up on. Lisa has been teaching Nadine and I to knit so we now have our very own stitch n' bitch. I made a scarf!! Now, there's Bryan. He's from Texas, pour guy, and very cool. He's a writer and loves the comic, sci-fi, Fear Factor side of life. He's a good guy and I love getting into debates with him. Jason is another proud canadian (with the flag tatooed on his leg). He's pretty nuts about mountain biking, as is Scott. The have since recruited Bryan into their little cycle cult and go riding often. Jason is married to Yuri and I haven't gotten to know either of them that well. They were in Canada when I arrived. Very cool folks though. And that's it for the teachers. The office crew is also really great. I love going to work. Honestly. I don't think I've ever really felt that before.
I have the largest apartment and I still don't understand why the other teachers (especially the couples) didn't snag it from the new kid, but they didn't. I lucked out. I have a lovely view and huge amounts of space. I love having everyone over for cards or knitting or drinking beer around the table. Hosting is definately for me - once I get out of my anal twitch about the music. I worry too much about what's playing...but I KNOW it sets a mood. Anyway, it's my own little twitch to deal with and get over.
All n' all, in the words of Annie, I think I'm gonna like it here!
